Obstetrics and
Gynaecology Experience
Obstetrics
Throughout my career I have always greatly enjoyed
obstetrics and my time on the labour ward. My
expertise in this area reflects 13 years experience
in busy teaching and district general hospitals
of which 12 years have been spent at registrar,
senior registrar and consultant level.
For six of these years I worked first as a Senior
Registrar and then Lecturer at The Royal Hospitals
Trust. The obstetric unit at The London was busy
with 3800 deliveries per annum and the regional
neonatal intensive care unit ensured that we managed
all our own high-risk pregnancies and also a large
number of outside referrals. The Homerton has
an even busier unit, and is due to deliver 4500
babies this year. Furthermore, we also have a
regional neonatal intensive care unit and, therefore,
deal with all of our own high risk pregnancies
and many outside referrals. As of next year we
will become one of only 10 Perinatal centres in
London as a result of our ability to deal with
high risk obstetrics and complex neonatal outcomes.
Privately I provide antenatal care from my offices
at 212-214 Great Portland street. I have admitting
rights at both the Portland and St Johns and Elizabeths
hospitals.
The philosophy that I have developed toward pregnancy
and childbirth is a patient centered approach
where I assist my patients in making informed
choices about their pregnancy and mode of delivery
and support them in their decision whether it
might be a holistic approach with minimal intervention,
an actively managed labour or an elective Caesarean
Section. I am unobtrusively vigilant to avoid
potential complications whilst minimizing unnecessary
intervention. I feel that working as part of a
team I am equipped to deal with most if not all
obstetric emergencies whilst maintaining a principle
that each birth should be individualized and as
pleasant and enjoyable as possible.
I believe that each women should have a free choice
and that she should be given unbiased information
on which to base this. My role is to provide information
and to assist in decision making whilst securing
safety for both mother and baby.

Gynaecology
General Gynaecology
Throughout my training, I have developed a keen
interest in all aspects of gynaecology both routine
and sub-specialised. I have had the good fortune
to work for a number of extremely skilled Gynaecological
Surgeons who in turn have encouraged me to develop
my own skills to a high standard.
Urogynaecology
Whilst working for Ms Cardozo as an SHO at Kings
I developed an interest in Uro-gynaecology, which
prompted my application for a 2 year, research
post in this sub?speciality. This post was predominately
clinically based, with research being carried
out on patients seen in the gynaecology clinic
or for urodynamic assessment.
I became actively involved in clinical research
particularly in the area of urodynamic investigation
of lower urinary tract dysfunction. As a result
I have presented widely at national and international
meetings and have a number of publications in
this field.
I currently run the Urogynaecology and Urodynamics
departments at the Homerton University Hospital.
Privately, I perform urodynamic assessments in
the radiology department at the London Clinic
where we have recently purchased state of the
art equipement.
Minimal Access
Surgery (MAS)
As a Senior Registrar at the Royal Hospitals Trust
I was encouraged to pursue an interest in laparoscopic
and endoscopic surgery, as it is one of three
recognised MATTU centres. I attended numerous
courses within the UK, France and USA.
As a result of my minimal access surgery training
I have obtained level III-IV accreditation in
laparoscopic and hysteroscopic surgery from the
RCOG (1999). I am also a registered preceptor
in laparoscopic training at the Royal College
of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists
I am currently the clinical lead for Minimal Access
Surgery at the Homerton University Hospital.
My aim is where possible to perform gynaecological
surgery using minimal access techniques in order
to maximise surgical outcome and minimise patient
morbidity.
Privately I operate mostly at the London Clinic
but also at the Portland, the Lister (Chelsea)
and the London Bridge hospital.
